Definitely, Maybe Movie Review

Basically, it’s How I Met Your Mother—and Why I’m Divorcing Her kind of movie. But that’s not to say it isn’t cleverly done at all. It actually is a pretty good movie.

William Hayes is a father of a very inquisitive 10-year old, and one day after her first sex-ed class, Maya taunts her father into telling her the story of how he and her mother first met. Will doesn’t give in at first because he says it’s complicated, and because they are in the midst of a divorce, but Maya assures him that it won’t be that complicated at all once he tells her the story.

So Will finally gives in, but creates a mystery love story for Maya, changing the names of the women in the story and letting Maya guess who among the women he will mention is her mother. The movie then goes into flashbacks, just occasionally going back to present when Maya would give comments or ask questions.

There are three women involved in Will’s story: his college sweetheart Emily, the headstrong journalist Summer, and the smart, carefree April. While Will tells the story to Maya and through her questions, he digs up old feelings and realizes an unfinished business he has with one of these women.

I don’t want to be a spoiler and tell you who Maya’s mother is, and who Will ends up with, or whether they are the same woman.

Because this is from the makers of Love Actually, which is one of my favorites, the movie offers snappy dialogue and humor. None of those cheesy lines and gestures usually present in usual romantic comedies. It’s believable. And the happy ending Will says is perfect.
