Love of Siam (Thai Film) Movie Review

I’ve come to know about the movie because a friend recommended—no, that would be an utter understatement—insisted that I watch this movie. He was so excited that he couldn’t stop himself from spoiling the plot of the film for me. Lucky for me though, he was too busy with a project that he knew he had to stop eventually. The next day however, he kept at it again about how he cried because of the movie and how beautiful the movie was and how everything about it was perfect: cinematography, soundtrack, acting, dialogue.

I said I promise to watch it as soon as I finish downloading it. That was three days ago. I watched it earlier today. At first, I was expecting to see death, broken heart, extreme suffering or whatever to make me cry. There wasn’t any. Or at least, there wasn’t any “loud” kind of suffering in the movie. Everything seemed to be hushed up, maybe because of the situation of the characters. However, the depth of loneliness and longing was there and constantly hanging in the air.

I didn’t cry after watching the film, but that isn’t to say that what my friend told me was a lie. I love the lyrics of the songs, and the indeed the cinematography was just excellent. The cast too were great in their own respects, and each actor gave a very excellent portrayal of their respective characters.

Love of Siam is the kind of movie that takes a while for you to absorb. It’s not something that would hit you square in the face with a very powerful dialogue or scene. It’s the kind that creeps up on you and slowly sinks in your skin and becomes a part of you that afterwards, after hours, days, months after you’ve seen it, you remember it like it’s a part of your past, and you carry a heavy burden in your heart about what happened. It’s that kind of movie.

Love of Siam is something I wouldn’t recommend to everyone, especially not to those who are sensitive about certain issues and could not or would not look past them and see beyond them. But if you think you have a deep understanding of the human heart, regardless of the gender, age or nationality, and you have cared for another person in your life, you should see this movie.
